Julius Caesar Report Research Paper Example
Julius Caesar Report Paper The exact date of the publication of Julius Caesar is not absolutely certain. However, most critics agree that the play was written sometime between 1598 and 1608 during, or just after, the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Julius Caesar is the first of Shakespeares three Roman Plays, the other two being Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus. As with his other Roman Plays, Julius Caesar is based on Plutarchs Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans from a translation by Sir Thomas North in 1579 from an earlier French version. The two texts have only minor differences the majority of the plot is taken from Plutarch and most of the speeches, most significantly excepting Antonys famous oration, are Norths words in verse. The play is also greatly influenced by the Elizabethan attitudes prevalent at the time for example, superstition. Several anachronisms are used in the Play for instance, he plucked me ope his doublet. Elizabethans wore doublets; Romans wore togas fastened at the shoulder. He was a soldier, scholar and politician and he was the first Roman to realise the benefits of a monarchical empire like England was at the time of Elizabeth I over a democratic state. To add to the intrigue surrounding him, he had also been killed by one of his closest friends. In the 6th century B.C.E, Lucius Junius Brutus, an ancestor of Marcus Brutus, led the citizens of Rome in rebellion against Tarquin the Proud, ruler of Rome at the time. Tarquin had reigned as a cruel tyrant, loathed by everyone. He was deposed by the Romans, and in 509 B.C.E, Rome was declared a republic. Brutus was glorified for his honourable actions, and since then, most Romans feared the title rex king. Five hundred years later, early in the first century B.C.E, Gaius Julius Caesar was born to an impoverished patrician family. Despite the fact that his family was not a prominent one, he had many influential relatives who helped him in his rise to supremacy. Later on in that century, Caesar allied with Pompey and Crassus to form the First Triumvirate, an important part of Roman history. The Roman Empire, which comprised of the majority of the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa, was shared out equally between them. However, when Crassus died in battle against the Parthians in 53 B.C.E; there was conflict between Caesar and Pompey since neither of the two wanted to share their power. Consequently, civil war broke out in Rome. Marcus Brutus and Caius Cassius were among those who fought with Pompey against Caesar; but when Caesar defeated Pompey, and later on Pompeys two sons, he pardoned Brutus and befriended him, and allowed Cassius to return to Rome at Brutuss request. After his victory, Caesar continued to climb in politics, religion and in the military. Although formerly two consuls had been elected as prime authority in Rome, Caesar alone ruled now, and as the majority of the Senate were his supporters, any decree he made would be carried out. Caesar was king of Rome in effect, if not in title. Several fiercely democratic families realised this and feared a replay of Tarquins tyrannical reign. Determined that Rome should remain a republic, a conspiracy of over 60 senatorial families was formed by Brutus and Cassius with the aim of murdering Caesar. To an extent, the plot succeeded. Caesar was assassinated on the 15th of March in the Capitol. However, far from being regarded as the heroes of Rome, as Lucius Junius Brutus and his followers had been five hundred years back, the conspirators were forced to flee Rome by Antony, Caesars close friend, and Octavius, his great-nephew and heir. Once again, civil war broke out in Rome, resulting in the deaths of Brutus and Cassius and most of their army. Antony and Octavius returned to Rome victorious and formed the Second Triumvirate with Lepidus, a general of Caesars army. Eventually, Antony and Lepidus withdrew from the triumvirate and Octavius alone was left to rule the great Roman Empire. He adopted his great-uncles name Caesar along with the name Augustus. He was now known as Augustus Caesar, and to this name he also added the title of Princeps the chief one. From then on, Rome officially ceased to be a republic.

Assassination Attempt on Mussolini
Assassination Attempt on Mussolini At 10:58 a.m. on April 7, 1926, Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolinià was heading back to his car after having just given a speech in Rome to the International Congress of Surgeons when a bullet nearly ended his life. Irish aristocrat Violet Gibson shot at Mussolini, but because he turned his head at the last moment, the bullet went through Mussolinis nose instead of his head. Gibson was caught immediately but never explained why she wanted to assassinate Mussolini. Assuming she was insane at the time of the shooting, Mussolini let Gibson go back to Great Britain, where she spent the rest of her life in a sanatorium.à The Assassination Attempt In 1926, Benito Mussolini had been the prime minister of Italy for four years and his schedule, like every countrys leader, was full and hectic. Having already met with Duke dAosta at 9:30 a.m. on April 7, 1926, Mussolini was driven to the capitol building in Rome to speak at the Seventh International Congress of Surgeons.à After Mussolini finished his speech praising modern medicine, he walked outside toward his car, a black Lancia, that was waiting to whisk Mussolini away. In the large crowd that had been waiting outside the capitol building for Mussolini to emerge, no one paid any attention to 50-year-old Violet Gibson. Gibson was easy to dismiss as a threat for she was small and thin, wore a worn black dress, had long, gray hair that was loosely pinned up, and gave off the general air of being disheveled. As Gibson stood outside near a lamppost, no one realized that she was both mentally unstable and carried a Lebel revolver in her pocket. Gibson had a prime spot. As Mussolini headed to his car, he got within just a foot of Gibson. She raised her revolver and pointed it at Mussolinis head. She then fired at near point-blank range. At nearly that exact time, a student band started playing Giovinezza, the National Fascist Partys official hymn. Once the song started, Mussolini turned to face the flag and snapped to attention, bringing his head back just enough for the bullet fired by Gibson to nearly miss him. A Bleeding Nose Rather than passing into Mussolinis head, the bullet passed through part of Mussolinis nose, leaving burn marks on both of his cheeks. Although onlookers and his staff were worried that the wound could be serious, it was not. Within minutes, Mussolini reappeared, wearing a large bandage over his nose. Mussolini was most surprised that it was a woman who had tried to kill him. Just after the attack, Mussolini murmured, A woman! Fancy, a woman! What Happened to Victoria Gibson? After the shooting, Gibson was grabbed by the crowd, pummeled, and nearly lynched on the spot. Policemen, however, were able to save her and bring her in for questioning. No real motive for the shooting was discovered and it is believed that she was insane when she attempted the assassination. Interestingly, rather than having Gibson killed, Mussolini had her deported back to Britain, where she spent her remaining years in a mental asylum. * Benito Mussolini as quoted in ITALY: Mussolini Trionfante TIME Apr. 19, 1926. The Lack of Professionalism within the NYPD's Applicant Processing Thesis
The Lack of Professionalism within the NYPD's Applicant Processing Division - Thesis Example The NYPD was established in the year 1845. However, it traces its roots as far back as 1625, when New York City was known as New Amsterdam (Wilson & Grammich, 2009). The NYPD is a combination of different forces which include Transit Police and New York City Housing Authority Police Departments the latter of the two being integrated into NYPD in 1995. The NYPD offers a number of services such as air support, criminal intelligence, public housing, narcotics among others. The mission of the department is to "enforce the laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear, and provide a safe environment." The department is made up of both sworn officers and support staff. The NYPD has been faced by many problems since its inception. There are many challenges that the department needs to overcome so as to live true to its mission. The department has a division known as the Recruit Processing Division. The recruit processing division is charged with the important task of determining who gets to join the NYPD. The task of recruiting for the NYPD does not reach the required standard and, there is need for an overhaul. This paper looks at the problems which affect the recruit processing department (RPD). The paper analyses the source of the problems and, their impact on policing. Finally the paper makes recommendations which, if implemented, would help in professionalizing the NYPD. I am grateful to Professor Jeffrey Katz and Suzanne Murphy, my Thesis advisors. I am indebted to them for the useful insights they gave while I was writing this work. Their input was useful in helping me to come up with the topic and also giving me guidelines on how to go about researching in such a difficult field. I am also grateful to my family who gave me useful insights on how I would improve my research and to cohort 117 for keeping me motivated. I appreciate those who read through my drafts and gave me tips on how I would improve my work. I am also very grateful to Manhattan College School of Continuing and Professional Studies for offering the resources which made the research for my thesis easier. Chapter One 1.0 Introduction The New York Applicant Processing Department (NYPD) is within the New York Police Department. The primary role of the division is getting candidates suitable for employment in the NYPD. This is a critical department since it sets the tone for policing

Pizza delivery industry Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Pizza delivery industry - Coursework Example Moves like: allowing the customers to choose the kind of toppings they prefer, has played a role in boosting their customer scope. The pizza delivery structure enables the customers to place their delivery orders online or to call the pizza outlets. What these franchises have in common is that they offer delivery services. This methodââ¬â¢s convenience is however dependent on weather conditions and gas prices. The key to success in this industry is the ability to keep up with current developments in the food industry. One instance is the idea of frozen pizza which has gained popularity in many households in America. The concept of social media is more involved now than ever. This is in light of recent discoveries which showed that nearly a half of pizza consumers visit Twitter or blog sites in search of pizza recommendations before they place their orders. Then there is a new trend among the youth; that of placing orders through text messaging. It is a trend that is rapidly getting popular and is being adopted by franchises in an attempt to keep up with recent

Against Abortion Essay -- Abortion Against Pro-Life Essays Argumentati
Against Abortion à à à à à Why is it that by 21 days into the fetal development the baby's heart begins to beat, but yet in most people's eyes the baby is still not 'technically' alive' That heart beat means nothing, it doesn't represent a human person whom God has created in his own image and has had a plan for that baby ever since the beginning of time. To most people that statement isn?t allowing women and their families freedom of choice. And yet that baby isn't given any say in its freedom to live. This paper will give many supporting statistics towards the right to life, I am pro-life. à à à à à *Forty-nine percent of pregnancies among American women are unintended, half of these are terminated by an abortion. Each year, two out of every one hundred women aged fifteen- forty-four have an abortion, forty-eight percent of them have had at least one previous abortion and sixty-one percent have had a previous birth. This means that these women understand the joy of a baby being born, and still choose to take away their privilege to live. They?ve carried this children before and know the happiness of seeing their own healthy child in their arms for the first time. Why then, when they know they are creating new life inside of them, choose to deprive their child the right to live and experience everything life has to offer. They willingly decide to kill that child, certainly for their own benefit. à à à à à Each year, an estimated forty-six million abortions occur worldwide. Of these, twenty million procedures are obtained illegally.* Why are there stories on the news everyday of people being murdered and mistreated and the culprit being sent to jail of punished in some way for the crime they?ve committed. Yet I don?t think I?ve ever heard on the news of a women being sent to jail for the murder of her unborn baby. It?s still illegal, it?s the murder of a child, they are given no freedom, and the mother goes unpunished. *On average, women give at least three reasons for choosing abortion; 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities; about 2/3 say they can?t afford a child; and 1/2 say they don?t want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner. A baby would interfere with their ?responsibilities?, one of the biggest responsibilities as a sexually active person is to use c... ...like to make a difference too, but the Supreme Court won?t allow him to. Partial-birth abortion is banned in certain states in the United States, its a horrible image to put in someone's head. However, some of the pictures I've seen really make people wonder how someone could destroy human life like that. Abortion all together should be banned, but some people are more pro-choice than pro-life. Senator John Kerry is pro-choice, if he is elected president there is virtually no hope in the end of abortion, and Roe v. Wade. President Bush is at least attempting to change the law, but is constantly being stuck down. John Kerry will do nothing in our country to stop the murder of unborn children. His concern is in Iraq, where a few people are dying each day, while every third baby conceived in America is killed by an abortion. Kerry wants to raise taxes for the wealthy, I wonder how they would feel about this tax raise knowing that some of it could be contributing to the murder of an unborn child. If Kerry wins the election basically all hope of ending abortion is crushed for another four years. Our worry won?t be on the Supreme Court, it will be on our pro-choice President.

Night vs the Color of Water Essay
Religion is one of the many aspects that make up a personââ¬â¢s identity. Religion plays a major role in the search for identity of Ruth McBride, in James McBrideââ¬â¢s The Color of Water, and Elie Wiesel, in his memoir, Night. Elie is tortured an dehumanized in concentration camps because heââ¬â¢s a Jew. He was seen as inferior because of his religion. Ruth was restricted from doing what her heart truly believed in because she was controlled by her Jewish faith. Her father represented the constraint of Judaism because he was a rabbi. Both stories prove religion can have a hindering effect on a personââ¬â¢s search for identity. Elieââ¬â¢s identity was changed greatly due to the effects of Judaism and the Holocaust. His identity was changed because heââ¬â¢d lost his innocence. ââ¬Å"The student of Talmud the child I was, had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me. My soul had been invaded ââ¬â and devoured ââ¬â by a black flameâ⬠, is Elieââ¬â¢s way of explaining that heââ¬â¢s no longer a child and had lost his faith in godââ¬â¢s justice (Wiesel, 37). He felt as though he was no longer a child or a student, he was a prisoner like any Jew. It made him angry to see what was happening to all the people in the camps. Elie began to question God and asked,ââ¬Å"Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for? â⬠as he was entering Birkenau (Wiesel, 33). From this point on, Elie began to lose his unconditional devotion to God. Although he lost his faith, he continued to pray for strength to stay by his fatherââ¬â¢s side to support him because he was the most important person in his life. He said,â⬠in spite of myself, a prayer formed inside me, a prayer to this God in whom I no longer believedâ⬠because he was praying for a way to preserve his humanity in a prison where every man would fend for themselves (Wiesel, 91). Judaism affected Ruth McBride deeply in various ways. She felt very restricted growing up in a Jewish Orthodox family and she complained that, â⬠there were too many rules to follow, too many forbiddens and ââ¬Ëyou canââ¬â¢tsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëyou mustnââ¬â¢tsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (McBride, 2). Her father was a very unloving person who would mistreat Ruth and her mother by doing things such as threatening to send Ruth back to Europe. He would also sexually abuse Ruth without her mother knowing. He would threaten her and she wasnââ¬â¢t allowed to tell anyone. She was ââ¬Å"afraid of Tateh and had no love for him at allâ⬠(McBride, 42). Ruth tried to stay strong for her mother who was sick with polio, so she hid everything she was feeling. She was the type of person to always be running away and she had very low self esteem, which most likely came as a habit from her childhood. Her son James said that she had a bicycle and she would just ride around all the time and he ââ¬Å"always thought mother was strange. She never cared to socialize with our always thought [his] mother was strange. She never cared to socialize with our neighborsâ⬠(McBride, 9). The bicycle symbolized her constant need for movement in order to deal with her stress and depression. If her life had been different, maybe she wouldââ¬â¢ve been able to find her true identity instead of being molded by fear and humiliation. Even though both Elie and Ruth werenââ¬â¢t able to be who they wanted to be because of their religion, both characters put family before themselves. Ruth always cared about her family, but her son would ââ¬Å"starve for love and affection [but] didnââ¬â¢t get [any] of thatâ⬠(McBride, 83). She didnââ¬â¢t show her children any love because thatââ¬â¢s not how she was raised. Ruth would descibe herself as a ââ¬Å"running-type personâ⬠(McBride, 42). Elie loved his father and wanted to take care of him even though his father wanted otherwise. When Elie wanted to watch over his father while they were freezing in a shed, his father said, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËDonââ¬â¢t worry son. Go to sleep. Iââ¬â¢ll watch over youââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ and when Elie said otherwise, his father refused to take no for an answer (Wiesel, 89). Elie Wiesel and Ruth McBride both had their identity effected by religion. In Elie Wieselââ¬â¢s memoir, Night, he explained that he lost his faith because of all the killings and injustices done to his fellow Jews. He was prosecuted for being a Jew and was dehumanized. In The Color of Water by James McBride, Ruth Jordan describes the hardships that Judaism meant for her. It stood for her father and all the unreasonable rules she had to follow throughout the course of her childhood. Religion hindered both Ruth and Elie as they grew, but it formed the strong people they became as adults.
